Part B give-back

Part B give-back benefits

How the Part B premium reduction works, who can get it, and what you may give up in exchange.

What it actually is

The formal name is a Part B premium reduction. Certain Medicare Advantage plans pay part of your monthly Part B premium on your behalf.

You do not receive a separate check. The reduction shows up as a smaller Part B premium deduction from your Social Security payment, or a smaller bill if you pay Medicare directly.

Who can get it

  • You must be enrolled in Part A and Part B and keep paying your Part B premium
  • You must join a Medicare Advantage plan that offers the reduction
  • The plan must be available in the county where you live

These plans are not offered everywhere. Availability changes from one county to the next, and from one year to the next.

The trade-off worth understanding

A plan that gives money back has to fund it somewhere. That often shows up as a narrower provider network, higher copays for certain services, or thinner extra benefits.

For some people the trade is clearly worth it. For someone with several specialists they intend to keep, it often is not. The only way to know is to check your own doctors and prescriptions against the specific plan.

Important: Benefits, and whether they are offered at all, vary by plan, by county, and by year. Not everyone qualifies, and not every plan includes these benefits. Nothing on this page is an offer of coverage. We do not offer every plan available in your area. Contact Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE, or your State Health Insurance Assistance Program to review all of your options.
