Medicare Supplement comparison

AARP Medicare Supplement Plans F, G and N

Compare standardized Medigap Plan F, Plan G, and Plan N benefits where available. Premiums, underwriting rules, discounts, and eligibility can vary by insurer, state, timing, and individual circumstances.

Plan F, G and N at a glance

  • Plan F offers very broad standardized Medigap coverage but is generally available only to people first eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020.
  • Plan G provides broad standardized coverage but does not pay the Part B deductible.
  • Plan N can have lower premiums than Plan G but includes certain cost sharing, including office and emergency-room copays where applicable, and it does not cover Part B excess charges.

Standardized benefits do not mean standardized prices

Medigap benefits are standardized by plan letter in most states, but premiums, rating methods, household discounts, underwriting, and service differ by insurer. State-specific rules also affect when you can change coverage without medical underwriting.

Before switching Medigap coverage

  • Confirm whether you have a guaranteed-issue right or other state protection.
  • Check whether medical underwriting can apply.
  • Compare the new premium, rate history, discounts, and standardized benefits.
  • Do not cancel existing coverage until the new policy is approved and effective.

Can someone newly eligible for Medicare buy Plan F?

Generally no. Plan F is not available to people who first became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020.

Are Plan G benefits the same across insurers?

The standardized medical benefits are the same by plan letter in most states, but premiums, underwriting, discounts, and service can differ.
