Start with the correct company name
The official brand is Physicians Mutual, with an “s” after Physicians. Current company materials refer to the Physicians Mutual family, which includes Physicians Mutual Insurance Company, Physicians Life Insurance Company and Physicians Select Insurance Company.
Those entities have different roles. Current dental materials identify Physicians Mutual Insurance Company as the underwriter. Current Medicare Supplement pages may identify Physicians Select or Physicians Life, depending on the page, state and policy series. Life and final-expense products may be issued by Physicians Life.
Always check the complete underwriting-company name, policy form and state disclosure. A family brand does not erase legal-company differences. O'Neal Insurance Group must also confirm appointment with the exact issuer—not merely recognize the Physicians Mutual name.
Products and state availability
Official 2026 sources support these categories:
- Medicare Supplement: available in selected states through Physicians Select Insurance Company or Physicians Life Insurance Company. A current California location check says the product is unavailable in California.
- Dental insurance: underwritten by Physicians Mutual Insurance Company where approved; a vision and hearing rider may be available in certain states.
- Life and final expense: permanent-life and final-expense solutions are marketed through Physicians Life. Secure Essential simplified-issue whole life launched for independent brokers in May 2026, subject to state approval.
- Medicare education: the carrier provides Medicare information but expressly says it does not sell Part D plans.
No current official evidence reviewed establishes Physicians Mutual as a Medicare Advantage, HMO, PPO, D-SNP, C-SNP or I-SNP carrier. Product pages use location settings, so availability must be verified for the applicant's state and ZIP code. Policy forms, plan designs, underwriting and benefits can differ.
Carrier and product availability varies by state, ZIP code, eligibility, underwriting and policy year. Contact O'Neal Insurance Group to learn which companies and products are currently available in your area.
Physicians Mutual Medicare Supplement guidance

Medicare Supplement insurance, also called Medigap, works with Original Medicare Parts A and B. Medicare pays first for covered services, then the supplement may pay eligible deductibles, copayments or coinsurance according to the standardized plan and policy.
Medigap does not replace Original Medicare and is not Medicare Advantage. It generally allows use of providers that participate in Medicare without an HMO or PPO network. A referral is not normally required by the Medigap insurer, although Medicare coverage rules still apply.
Current Physicians Mutual family materials discuss traditional standardized Medigap and a branded Innovative Plan G. Marketing names do not override state-approved policy language. Confirm the issuer, form, benefits, premium structure and availability for the state. California was explicitly shown as unavailable during this review.
The Medigap Open Enrollment Period usually lasts six months beginning when someone is 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. Outside protected periods, medical underwriting may apply unless guaranteed-issue rights or state rules apply. Do not cancel existing coverage until the new policy is approved and effective.
No Physicians Mutual Medicare Advantage or Part D product was verified
Physicians Mutual's official Medicare FAQ says, “We do not sell Medicare Part D plans.” Its current public materials also do not establish a Medicare Advantage contract.
Therefore, do not market Physicians Mutual Part C, HMO, PPO, PFFS, D-SNP, C-SNP or I-SNP plans. Do not connect Physicians Mutual with Part B givebacks, flex cards, Medicare Advantage dental allowances, food, utilities, transportation, OTC or fitness benefits.
A beneficiary choosing Physicians Mutual Medigap usually needs to compare a separate Part D plan if prescription coverage is desired. Someone interested in Medicare Advantage should compare approved carriers serving the person's county. Medigap cannot be used to pay Medicare Advantage cost sharing.
Comparing Physicians Mutual insurance plans
In most states, the core benefits of a lettered Medigap plan are standardized. The same plan letter has the same basic medical benefits across insurers, but premiums, rating approach, discounts, underwriting and customer service differ. Massachusetts, Minnesota and Wisconsin use different standardization systems.
Plans C and F are generally unavailable to people newly eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020. Plan G does not cover the Part B deductible. Plan N uses certain office and emergency-department copayments and does not cover Part B excess charges. Always use the current state outline rather than a national summary.
Physicians Mutual markets certain distinctive features for its products, including a possible opportunity for eligible new customers to switch policy options within a stated period. Such features must be verified in the state-specific contract and should not be described as universal or guaranteed without the policy.
Physicians Mutual dental insurance
Physicians Mutual Insurance Company offers stand-alone dental insurance where approved. Current materials describe multiple plan levels, access to a large partner network and the ability to use out-of-network dentists, subject to policy reimbursement rules. A vision and hearing rider may not be available in every state.
Dental coverage is not part of Original Medicare or Medigap. Compare:
- Preventive, basic and major service definitions.
- Waiting periods for major services.
- The percentage or schedule the policy pays.
- Network negotiated fees and out-of-network reimbursement.
- Deductibles, annual or service limits and exclusions.
- Crowns, root canals, dentures, implants and replacement rules.
- Vision examination, eyewear, hearing examination and hearing-aid terms if a rider is offered.
The carrier's website may display example percentages or procedure counts. Use the actual state policy for the applicant rather than repeating a national example as a promise.
Physicians Life and final-expense coverage
Life insurance pays a death benefit to the beneficiary when the policy is in force and the claim is covered. Final-expense insurance is usually permanent life insurance with a benefit intended to help survivors handle funeral costs, debts or other needs.
Physicians Mutual announced Secure Essential simplified-issue whole life in May 2026 for independent brokers and older applicants. “Simplified issue” generally means streamlined underwriting, not automatic approval. Verify state approval, issue ages, face amounts, health questions, graded-benefit provisions, premium schedule and riders.
Compare permanent and term coverage, beneficiary designations, cash value, contestability and replacement consequences. Do not replace an existing policy solely because a new product has a simpler application.
Extra Help, Medicaid and Medicare Savings Programs

Extra Help and LIS are two names for the same federal Low-Income Subsidy, which may help eligible beneficiaries with Part D costs. Because Physicians Mutual does not sell Part D, Extra Help would apply to a separate approved drug plan rather than a Physicians Mutual Medigap policy.
Medicare Savings Programs may help eligible people with the Part B premium and certain Medicare cost sharing. Medicaid and MSP eligibility are decided by state agencies; Social Security handles federal Extra Help applications. A carrier or insurance agent cannot approve eligibility.
A person with Medicaid should review whether buying Medigap is appropriate and permitted. A D-SNP, if available from another carrier, has separate county and Medicaid-category requirements.
Veterans and military families
VA health care, TRICARE For Life and Medicare are separate systems. Physicians Mutual Medigap does not replace VA benefits and generally supplements only Medicare-approved claims. Confirm prescriptions, non-VA care, referrals, emergency services and military-benefit effects with the VA or TRICARE.
People with TRICARE For Life generally must maintain Medicare Parts A and B, subject to TRICARE rules. A separate Part D plan may be unnecessary or disruptive for someone with creditable military drug coverage, so confirm before applying.
How a licensed agent narrows Physicians Mutual insurance plans
An appropriately licensed and appointed agent can:
- Confirm whether Physicians Mutual family coverage is offered in the state.
- Identify Physicians Mutual, Physicians Life or Physicians Select as the issuer.
- Compare available Medigap plans, premiums and enrollment rights.
- Help compare a separate Part D plan from an approved carrier.
- Review dental network, waiting periods and covered services.
- Explain life and final-expense underwriting and policy terms.
- Submit an application after the consumer decides.
The agent does not determine Medicare, Medicaid or Extra Help eligibility. O'Neal Insurance Group must verify state license, company appointment and product authorization before carrier-specific sales or enrollment assistance.
Seven comparison steps
- Confirm residence, Medicare status and enrollment rights.
- Identify the Physicians Mutual family underwriting company.
- Verify state availability and the current policy form.
- Compare premiums, benefits, underwriting, exclusions and renewability.
- For Medigap, compare a separate Part D plan when needed.
- Check existing coverage and replacement consequences.
- Apply only after reading the outline and official policy documents.
Frequently asked questions

The current location-specific page reviewed states that the product is not available in California.

No current Physicians Mutual Medicare Advantage product was verified.
Does Physicians Mutual sell Part D plans?

Does Physicians Mutual offer dental insurance?

Is Physicians Life the same as Physicians Mutual?
Physicians Life is a related legal company in the Physicians Mutual family. It is not the same underwriting entity.

How to compare Physicians Mutual insurance plans against the alternatives
No carrier is the right answer for everybody, and that includes Physicians Mutual insurance plans. What decides it is your own doctors, your own prescriptions and how you prefer to pay, in that order.
Start with your providers. Check every physician you want to keep against the plan directory, and confirm the medical group as well as the individual name. That single step rules Physicians Mutual insurance plans in or out faster than any brochure will.
Then price your prescriptions. Two plans with an identical premium can differ by thousands of dollars a year once your real drug list is run against each formulary. Ask specifically about tiers, step therapy and prior authorization.
Then look at the ceiling, not the premium. Every Medicare Advantage plan carries an annual out-of-pocket maximum; Original Medicare on its own does not. That ceiling is the real protection, and it varies by thousands of dollars between plans.
Commissions are set by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and are identical across carriers for the same product line. An independent agent comparing Physicians Mutual insurance plans with everything else available in your county therefore has no financial reason to favor one over another.
What 2026 changes for Physicians Mutual insurance plans
Two federal rules apply to every Part D policy this year, Physicians Mutual insurance plans included, whether standalone or bundled inside a Medicare Advantage plan. No plan may charge a drug deductible above $615, and once you have spent $2,100 out of pocket on covered drugs your cost for the rest of the calendar year drops to zero.
The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan lets you spread that $2,100 across monthly installments instead of facing a large bill in January. It is worth asking about if your medications are expensive early in the year.
What still changes annually is the detail: networks, formularies, copays and supplemental benefits. The Annual Notice of Change your carrier sends by September 30 is where those changes are disclosed, and it is the document to read before deciding whether to keep Physicians Mutual insurance plans for another year.
Enrollment windows that apply to Physicians Mutual insurance plans

The windows below govern Physicians Mutual insurance plans exactly as they govern every other Medicare Advantage and Part D plan. They are federal, not carrier-specific, and no salesperson can extend one for you.
Initial Enrollment Period. Seven months centred on the month you turn 65 — the three months before, the birthday month itself, and the three months after. Part B and Part D late penalties are permanent, so this is the window that costs money to miss.
Annual Enrollment, October 15 to December 7. Open to everyone on Medicare. Whatever you choose takes effect on January 1.
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment, January 1 to March 31. One change only, and only if you are already enrolled in an Advantage plan.
Special Enrollment Periods. Moving out of a plan’s service area, losing employer coverage, entering or leaving a nursing home, or gaining or losing Medicaid each open a window outside the normal calendar.

Quick answers about Physicians Mutual insurance plans
Are Physicians Mutual insurance plans available where I live?
Availability is set county by county, not statewide, so the honest answer depends on your permanent address. Give a licensed agent your ZIP code and county and you will know in a minute whether Physicians Mutual insurance plans are on your list at all.
Do Physicians Mutual insurance plans include prescription drug coverage?
Most Medicare Advantage plans bundle Part D, but not all of them do, and the formulary matters more than the fact of inclusion. Check each of your medications by name and dose before assuming Physicians Mutual insurance plans cover what you take.
