Medicare plans Gulfport residents can compare in 2026

The Medicare plans Gulfport residents can join in 2026 fall into three groups: Original Medicare paired with a Medigap policy, Medicare Advantage, and standalone Part D drug coverage. Roughly 16.3% of Gulfport’s 76,506 residents are 65 or older, which is about 12,000 neighbors weighing the same decision you are.

Harrison County is not the same market as Jackson County next door. The Medicare plans Gulfport carriers file here are built around Memorial Hospital at Gulfport and Singing River Gulfport, the Harrison County hospital that Singing River bought from HCA in 2020 and that older directories still list under its former name, Garden Park Medical Center. Two plans that look identical on paper can have very different networks on either side of the county line.

O’Neal Insurance Group is a Black-owned independent agency licensed in Mississippi. We compare the Medicare plans Gulfport, Biloxi, Long Beach, Pass Christian and D’Iberville residents can enroll in, and our help costs you nothing — agents are paid by the carrier, never by you.

The four parts behind every Medicare plan

Diagram showing Part A and Part B as Original Medicare, then the two routes: keeping Original Medicare with a Part D drug plan and optional Medigap, or taking a Medicare Advantage Part C plan that replaces A and B.
The four parts of Medicare and the two routes

Every one of the Medicare plans Gulfport agents can offer you is assembled from the same four building blocks.

Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing, hospice and some home health care. Most people pay no premium for it, because they or a spouse paid Medicare taxes for at least 40 quarters.

Part B covers outpatient care, doctor visits, lab work and preventive services. It carries a monthly premium and a late-enrollment penalty that lasts for life, so timing matters more than most people expect.

Part C is Medicare Advantage. A private carrier takes over your Part A and Part B benefits and usually adds drug coverage plus extras such as dental, vision and hearing. Most of the Medicare plans Gulfport residents actually enroll in are Part C plans.

Part D is prescription drug coverage, sold either as a standalone policy alongside Original Medicare or bundled inside an Advantage plan. In 2026 no Part D plan may charge a deductible above $615, and once you have spent $2,100 out of pocket on covered drugs, your cost for the rest of the year drops to zero.

How a broker narrows the Medicare plans Gulfport carriers offer

A licensed agent’s job is to shorten the list. Start from your doctors, your prescriptions and your budget, and most of the Medicare plans Gulfport has available eliminate themselves within a few minutes.

Your providers come first

If you see a cardiologist at Memorial or a specialist at Singing River Gulfport, that relationship decides more than any brochure will. We check each plan’s directory against your actual physicians rather than assuming a large carrier covers everyone in Harrison County.

Then your medications

Two plans with the same premium can differ by thousands of dollars a year depending on which tier your drugs land on and whether the plan requires prior authorization first.

Then how you prefer to pay

Medicare Advantage keeps the monthly cost low and charges you as you use care. Medigap does the reverse. Neither is better in the abstract; it depends on whether a predictable premium or a low premium suits your household budget.

Commissions are set by CMS and are the same from every carrier for the same product line. That is why a broker can compare Humana, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Wellcare and Devoted Health side by side without a financial reason to prefer one over another.

Where Medigap fits among the Medicare plans Gulfport offers

Original Medicare pays roughly 80% of Part B costs and leaves the rest to you with no annual ceiling. A Medigap policy fills those gaps and lets you use any provider in the country who accepts Medicare — useful if you travel to New Orleans or Mobile for specialist care, or spend part of the year away from the coast.

Mississippi does not have a Medigap birthday rule. Several states give beneficiaries an annual window to switch Medigap policies without medical underwriting; Mississippi is not one of them. Your guaranteed-issue right runs for six months beginning the month you turn 65 and enroll in Part B.

That single fact changes the arithmetic for anyone weighing the Medicare plans Gulfport offers. The choice is easy to reverse in one direction and hard in the other: you can leave Medicare Advantage for Original Medicare during the annual window, but a Medigap carrier can still underwrite you when you apply, and can decline you or charge more based on your health.

Medicare Advantage: the Medicare plans Gulfport enrollees pick most

Advantage plans dominate enrollment on this stretch of coast. Harrison County has a dense hospital footprint for its size, so carriers can build tight networks around it and still offer low or zero premiums.

HMO plans require you to stay in network except in an emergency and usually ask you to name a primary care physician. PPO plans cost a little more and let you go out of network at a higher share of the cost. If you split your time between Gulfport and family elsewhere, that flexibility is often worth paying for.

Every Advantage plan carries an annual out-of-pocket maximum, which Original Medicare on its own does not. That ceiling is the real protection the plan gives you, and across the Medicare plans Gulfport carriers file it varies by thousands of dollars.

The extras carriers advertise — over-the-counter cards, transportation, fitness memberships — are real but secondary. Choose on network and drug coverage first, then treat the extras as a tiebreaker among the Medicare plans Gulfport residents are otherwise happy with.

Veterans have an extra wrinkle. The Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System is based in neighbouring Biloxi, and beneficiaries who use VA care alongside Medicare should look hard at drug coverage, because VA prescriptions do not coordinate with Part D. Retirees with TRICARE for Life face different arithmetic again.

Drug coverage inside the Medicare plans Gulfport carriers sell

Prescription coverage is where the Medicare plans Gulfport seniors choose most often go wrong. No plan is good or bad for drugs in general; it is good or bad for your specific list.

Bring the actual bottles, or a printed list with doses. Then check three things: whether each drug is on the plan’s formulary, which tier it sits on, and whether the plan demands step therapy or prior authorization before it will pay.

The 2026 rules help everyone. The $2,100 annual out-of-pocket cap replaced the old coverage gap entirely, and the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan lets you spread that amount across monthly installments instead of facing a large bill in January.

If your income is limited, Extra Help through Social Security can cut premiums and copays substantially. Many people who qualify never apply, and it costs nothing to find out.

Enrollment mistakes to avoid in Harrison County

Missing your Initial Enrollment Period is the expensive one. It runs seven months: the three months before your 65th birthday month, the birthday month itself, and the three months after. None of the Medicare plans Gulfport carriers offer can undo a Part B or Part D late penalty once it attaches, because those penalties are permanent.

Assuming employer coverage counts is the second. Some group plans qualify as creditable coverage and let you delay Part B without penalty; others do not, and small-employer plans frequently do not. Confirm it in writing before you skip enrollment.

Renewing on autopilot is the third. Carriers change formularies, networks and copays every year, and the Annual Notice of Change that lands each September is where those changes are disclosed. Reviewing the Medicare plans Gulfport carriers offer each autumn takes about half an hour.

Enrolling straight from a television advertisement is the fourth. Those numbers route to national call centers that may represent a single carrier. Comparing the Medicare plans Gulfport residents can actually use takes someone who knows which local physicians sit in which network.

When you can enroll or switch

Medicare runs on a calendar, and knowing which window you are standing in saves a great deal of frustration.

Initial Enrollment Period. Seven months, centred on the month you turn 65. Sign up during the three months before your birthday month and coverage begins on the first day of that month.

Annual Enrollment Period, October 15 to December 7. Anyone can switch between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage, change Advantage plans, or change Part D plans. Whatever you choose takes effect on January 1.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment, January 1 to March 31. If you are already in an Advantage plan and it is not working out, you get one chance to move to a different Advantage plan or drop back to Original Medicare with a Part D policy.

Special Enrollment Periods. Moving out of your plan’s service area, losing employer coverage, entering or leaving a nursing home, or qualifying for Medicaid or Extra Help each open a window outside the usual calendar. Moving away from Harrison County is a common trigger on this coast, and so is moving here from out of state.

Mississippi beneficiaries who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid can generally change plans once per quarter for the first three quarters of the year — more flexibility than most people realize they have.

What to bring when you meet an agent

A half-hour appointment goes much further with a little preparation. Bring:

Under Medicare marketing rules an agent must have a Scope of Appointment on file before discussing specific plans with you, and may only cover the product lines you agreed to. That form protects you; it is not a commitment to buy anything.

Coastal households have one further consideration. If you evacuate inland during hurricane season, or spend months away from Harrison County, ask specifically how a plan handles care outside its service area — an HMO and a PPO answer that question very differently.

Free help with the Medicare plans Gulfport offers

You do not have to pay anyone for help with this decision. Mississippi funds a State Health Insurance Assistance Program through the Division of Aging and Adult Services, which provides free one-to-one counseling with no sales involvement. Call (601) 359-4956 or (888) 240-7539.

The Mississippi Insurance Department publishes Medigap rate comparisons and takes consumer complaints at (800) 562-2957. If a carrier or an agent has treated you unfairly, that is where the complaint belongs.

Medicare’s own Plan Compare tool lists every plan available in your Harrison County ZIP code with your prescriptions priced in. It draws on the same data agents use.

The four Medicare enrollment windows

Harrison County splits almost exactly down the middle

CMS enrollment data for May 2026 counts 47,300 Medicare beneficiaries in Harrison County. Of those, 23,517 — about 49.7 percent — hold a private plan, and 23,783 remain in Original Medicare.

Mississippi as a whole runs at 45.3 percent and the country at 51.2 percent, so Harrison sits above its state and just below the national figure. Neither route is the minority choice here, which is why the Medicare plans Gulfport residents consider should always include a supplement quote rather than being narrowed to Advantage by default.

About 9,220 Harrison County beneficiaries — roughly 19.5 percent — hold Medicare and Medicaid together. If your income is anywhere near the limits, the Medicare Savings Programs are worth checking before you compare anything, because qualifying reshapes the whole calculation.

Care on this coast crosses county lines, and plans do not

The three coastal counties sit close together and people move between them freely for care. The plan filings do not.

Jackson County next door runs at 51.3 percent in private plans across 31,394 beneficiaries — a different market with a different plan list. A Harrison County filing may contract with providers in Jackson or Hancock, but it is not obliged to, and the answer changes between carriers and from one year to the next.

So name the providers you use by county, not just by name. If your cardiologist is in Ocean Springs and your primary care is in Gulfport, both need checking against every plan on your shortlist.

Moving across a county line is a qualifying event that opens a Special Enrollment Period, which matters on a coast where people relocate within the same metropolitan area more often than they leave it.

The coverage question nobody asks until August

Living on this coast means the possibility of being somewhere else for a fortnight at no notice. It is worth knowing in advance how your coverage behaves when that happens, because the answer differs sharply between the routes.

Emergency and urgently needed care are covered anywhere in the United States under every Medicare Advantage plan, whatever the network. That protection is solid and it is worth knowing. Planned care outside the service area is a different matter, and on an HMO it is generally not covered at all.

Prescriptions are the practical problem. Ask your drug plan now what it does about an early refill during a declared emergency and which out-of-area pharmacies it will use, because that is not a question to research from an evacuation route. Keep a current medication list, with doses and prescriber names, somewhere that is not only your kitchen drawer.

Original Medicare with a supplement behaves differently again. There is no network and no service area, so any provider in the country that accepts Medicare assignment is covered on the same terms as one in Gulfport. For a household that spends weeks away, or that has family inland it would evacuate to, that portability is a genuine argument and belongs in the comparison of the Medicare plans Gulfport carriers file.

Some plans also offer a visitor or traveler benefit that extends coverage for a set number of consecutive months away. Ask whether yours does and for how long, because the limits vary and they are rarely advertised.

None of this is a reason to choose one route over another on its own. It is a reason to ask the question in spring rather than discovering the answer in September, and it applies to every one of the Medicare plans Gulfport offers.
