What changed to HealthSpring?
HealthSpring is Health Care Service Corporation's new brand for the Medicare business formerly owned by The Cigna Group. HCSC announced that the formal transition would occur January 1, 2026. Older documents or provider references may still use Cigna names, but current comparisons should use 2026 HealthSpring contracts and plan documents.
The carrier announced Medicare Advantage options across 29 states and Washington, D.C. That aggregate footprint does not establish statewide service. A licensed O'Neal Insurance Group agent can help identify current plans in your permanent ZIP code and county.

| HealthSpring Medigap | Original Medicare access | PDP separate | No MA extras | Separate insurance path. |
HMO and PPO guidance
An HMO generally requires contracted providers except for emergency, urgent and defined care. A primary care provider may coordinate treatment, and authorization may apply. A PPO generally permits qualifying out-of-network care but often charges more; noncontracted providers may decline routine treatment.
Check every doctor and hospital under the full plan name. Also compare the annual maximum out-of-pocket limit for covered Parts A and B services. Prescription costs follow Part D rules.
Special Needs Plans
A HealthSpring D-SNP may be available to someone with Medicare and qualifying Medicaid in a participating county. Medicaid category can affect costs and benefits. The state agency determines eligibility.
A C-SNP requires a chronic condition covered by the exact plan, county availability and condition verification. Current formularies document HealthSpring Achieve HMO C-SNP and TotalCare HMO D-SNP product lines, but these names do not prove availability everywhere.
Discuss an I-SNP only when current CMS and HealthSpring documents verify one.
Part D, Extra Help and Savings Programs
HealthSpring offers Part D through MAPD and standalone PDP products where documented. Check every drug, dosage, tier, authorization, quantity limit and pharmacy.
Extra Help and LIS are the same federal Part D assistance program. Medicare Savings Programs and Medicaid are government programs. Agents may explain requirements but do not determine eligibility.
Givebacks, flex cards and supplemental benefits
Some 2026 HealthSpring plans may include a Part B reduction, dental, vision, hearing, OTC, fitness or other supplemental features. Each must be verified in the exact Summary of Benefits.
A giveback reduces the amount paid toward Part B; it is not cash. A flex card follows approved-expense, merchant and eligibility rules.
Part B premium reductions, flex cards, and other supplemental benefits are not included with every Medicare Advantage plan. Availability, eligibility, benefit amounts, approved expenses, and participating locations vary by plan and service area.
Veterans
VA health care, TRICARE and Medicare are separate. HealthSpring MA does not replace VA benefits. Review non-VA providers, prescriptions, urgent/emergency care and authorization. TRICARE beneficiaries should confirm coordination before changing coverage.
Reviewing a plan after the brand transition
People familiar with an older Cigna Medicare name should not assume that every 2025 provider, pharmacy, formulary rule or benefit carried into HealthSpring unchanged. Use the 2026 member ID card and plan documents. Ask a doctor's office to verify the exact contract and plan, not only whether it accepted the former carrier brand.
Review recurring prescriptions carefully. Confirm covered alternatives, specialty-pharmacy requirements, prior authorization, step therapy and mail-order options. If a medication is not covered, the Evidence of Coverage explains exception and appeal processes.
For medical care, check the primary physician, specialists, hospital system, rehabilitation facilities, labs, imaging centers and durable medical equipment suppliers. Provider directories can change, so confirm directly with both the plan and provider.
Annual comparison priorities
Compare the premium, medical deductible, drug deductible, copayments, coinsurance and maximum out-of-pocket limit. Then review benefits likely to be used. A large advertised allowance may be less valuable if needed providers or prescriptions do not fit the plan.
D-SNP shoppers should confirm the Medicaid category and whether benefits or cost sharing change with that category. C-SNP shoppers should identify the qualifying condition, verification deadline and care-management expectations. Medigap shoppers should compare the separate premium and PDP because Medigap is not bundled Part C coverage.
The Annual Notice of Change explains year-to-year revisions. Keep it with the Summary of Benefits and Evidence of Coverage, and ask questions before the enrollment deadline rather than after care is needed.
People who moved during the transition should update Medicare and the plan promptly. A permanent move may create a Special Enrollment Period, but the dates and choices depend on the circumstances. Do not rely on an old address to display plans.
If an older document uses a former Cigna name, match the contract and plan ID to the current HealthSpring document. The contract number is more reliable than a familiar marketing name when confirming providers or appealing a coverage decision.
Common transition mistakes
Do not assume an old member card remains valid, that a former online account shows every current document, or that a provider's historical Cigna participation proves current HealthSpring participation. Do not combine benefits from two similarly named plans. When calling a provider, give the complete plan and contract information. Save screenshots or dated notes from searches, then confirm important care with Member Services. If a prescription or provider is missing, review alternatives and appeal rights before enrolling rather than expecting an exception after coverage begins.
How an agent can help
An agent can verify county plans and the post-transition entity; compare HMO, PPO, SNP, PDP and Medigap options; check providers and drugs; review costs and benefits; and submit an enrollment application after a decision. Government eligibility is not determined by the agent.
