Medicare plans Jackson: a licensed local agent comparing Medicare Advantage, Medigap and Part D options with Jackson, Mississippi residents
Medicare Plans in Jackson, Mississippi 5

Medicare plans Jackson residents can enroll in for 2026 fall into three groups: Original Medicare paired with a Medigap policy, Medicare Advantage, and standalone Part D prescription drug coverage. Which of the Medicare plans Jackson carriers offer are open to you depends on the county of your permanent address, not the city name on your post.

Medicare plans Jackson residents can compare

Jackson is the largest medical hub in Mississippi, and many residents across the state travel here for specialist care. That makes network access the central question when comparing plans.

You can meet by phone or online screen sharing rather than traveling anywhere. Call (601) 773-3933 to talk through your options with a licensed agent.

Hinds County decides what you can enroll in

Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are approved county by county, not statewide. Jackson sits in Hinds County, and your permanent address is what determines the plans you are eligible to join. Neighbouring Rankin and Madison counties can have a different plan menu, so confirm which county your address actually falls in.

Check your doctors and hospitals first

Care around Jackson is concentrated in a small number of systems, including the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Baptist Medical Center, St. Dominic's and Merit Health Central. Participation changes from year to year and can differ between two plans from the same insurer, so confirm your own doctors and preferred hospital directly with the plan and with the provider office before you enroll.

If you travel to Jackson for specialist care

People who live outside Hinds County but receive specialist treatment in Jackson need to check that their plan covers those providers at in-network rates. A plan that works well close to home can become expensive if your specialist sits outside its network.

What to have ready

  • Your Medicare number and your Part A and Part B start dates.
  • Your permanent Jackson ZIP code.
  • Every doctor and specialist you want to keep.
  • Every prescription, with exact dosage and frequency.
  • Any Medicaid, Extra Help, VA or employer coverage you already have.

Enrollment periods that apply

Most people can change plans during the Annual Enrollment Period each autumn, effective January 1. If you are already in a Medicare Advantage plan, a further window early in the year lets you switch once or return to Original Medicare. Special Enrollment Periods may apply if you move, lose other coverage, or gain or lose Medicaid. Moving into or out of Jackson is itself a qualifying event worth asking about.

Look past the premium when comparing Medicare plans Jackson offers

2026 Medicare costs: Part A premium free with 40 quarters and a $1,736 deductible per benefit period, Part B at $202.90 a month with a $283 deductible, and Part D capped at $2,100 a year with a maximum $615 deductible.
What Medicare costs in 2026

A zero-dollar premium does not mean zero cost. Compare the annual out-of-pocket maximum, specialist and hospital copays, and how each of your prescriptions is tiered on that plan's formulary. For most people it is the drug tiers and the out-of-pocket ceiling, not the premium, that decide what a plan really costs over a year.

The four parts behind the Medicare plans Jackson offers

Diagram showing Part A and Part B as Original Medicare, then the two routes: keeping Original Medicare with a Part D drug plan and optional Medigap, or taking a Medicare Advantage Part C plan that replaces A and B.
The four parts of Medicare and the two routes

Every plan you will be shown is built from the same four federal building blocks. Knowing which is which makes the rest of the comparison much easier.

Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing care, hospice and some home health. Most people pay no premium for it, because they or a spouse paid Medicare taxes for at least 40 quarters.

Part B covers outpatient care, doctor visits, lab work and preventive services. It carries a monthly premium and a late-enrollment penalty that lasts for life, so the timing of your enrollment matters more than most people expect.

Part C is Medicare Advantage. A private carrier takes over your Part A and Part B benefits and usually adds drug coverage plus extras such as dental, vision and hearing. Most of the Medicare plans Jackson residents actually enroll in are Part C plans, because the local market is competitive.

Part D is prescription drug coverage, sold either as a standalone policy alongside Original Medicare or bundled inside an Advantage plan.

The alternative route is Original Medicare paired with a Medicare Supplement, or Medigap, policy. That costs more each month, has no network at all, and leaves you very little to pay when you actually use care.

Mississippi has no Medigap birthday rule

Calendar showing the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period from 15 October to 7 December, Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment and General Enrollment from 1 January to 31 March, and the seven-month Initial Enrollment Period around your 65th birthday.
The four Medicare enrollment windows

This is the single most important piece of timing information for anyone in Mississippi weighing Original Medicare against Medicare Advantage, and it is the one most often left out.

Several states give Medicare Supplement policyholders an annual window to switch policies without answering health questions. Mississippi is not one of them.

Your one unconditional opportunity to buy a Medigap policy is the six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period that begins the month you turn 65 and are enrolled in Part B. During those six months a carrier must sell you any policy it offers at its standard rate, whatever your health history.

After that window closes, and outside a guaranteed-issue right, a Mississippi carrier may underwrite you: ask health questions, charge more, or decline you altogether.

That asymmetry is worth understanding before you choose. You can leave a Medicare Advantage plan for Original Medicare during the annual window, but nothing obliges a Medigap carrier to accept you when you apply.

Free, unbiased counseling is available from the Mississippi Division of Aging and Adult Services on (601) 359-4956 or (888) 240-7539, and the Mississippi Insurance Department publishes Medigap rate comparisons and takes complaints on (800) 562-2957.

What prescription coverage costs in 2026

Drug coverage is where choices among the Medicare plans Jackson offers most often go wrong. No plan is good or bad for drugs in general — it is good or bad for your particular list.

The 2026 rules help everyone. No Part D plan may charge a deductible above $615, and once you have spent $2,100 out of pocket on covered drugs your cost for the rest of the calendar year drops to zero. The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan lets you spread that amount across monthly installments rather than facing a large bill in January.

What still varies is the formulary. Check three things for every medication you take: whether the drug is covered at all, which tier it sits on, and whether the plan demands step therapy or prior authorization before it will pay.

If your income is limited, Extra Help through Social Security can cut premiums and copays substantially. A great many people who qualify never apply, and checking costs nothing.

How we narrow the Medicare plans Jackson offers

A licensed agent’s job is to make the list shorter, not longer. Three questions do most of the work.

Your doctors. We check every physician you want to keep against each plan’s directory, and confirm the medical group as well as the individual name. This alone eliminates most of the Medicare plans Jackson carriers sell.

Your prescriptions. Two plans with an identical premium can differ by thousands of dollars a year once your real drug list is priced against each formulary.

How you prefer to pay. Medicare Advantage keeps the monthly cost low and charges you as you use care. Medigap reverses that. Neither is better in the abstract; it depends on your budget and your tolerance for an unexpected bill.

Commissions are set by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and are identical across carriers for the same product line, so an independent broker comparing the Medicare plans Jackson carriers file has no financial reason to steer you toward any one of them. Our help costs you nothing.

Hinds County has the highest dual eligible rate in the state we serve

This is the fact that should shape most conversations about Medicare plans Jackson residents can join, and it is almost never mentioned.

CMS enrollment data for May 2026 puts Hinds County at 45,673 Medicare beneficiaries. Of those, 12,667 are dual eligible — they hold both Medicare and Medicaid. That is 27.7 percent, well over one beneficiary in four, and it is far above the Mississippi average.

Being dual eligible changes almost everything about what Medicare costs. The Medicare Savings Programs can pay your Part B premium and, at the highest level, your deductibles and coinsurance as well. Extra Help arrives automatically and cuts prescription costs to a few dollars a script. Dual Eligible Special Needs Plans exist specifically for this situation and are frequently the right answer where they are available.

Given how many people in Hinds County qualify, the more useful question on this page is not which plan is cheapest but whether you should be paying at all.

The 2026 limits behind the Medicare plans Jackson residents pay for

For 2026 the Qualified Medicare Beneficiary level reaches about $1,350 a month for one person and $1,824 for a couple, with countable resources up to $9,950 and $14,910. Two further levels extend to roughly $1,616 and $1,816 a month for an individual. Extra Help runs to about $23,940 a year for one person and $32,460 for a couple.

Your home, your car and certain burial funds generally do not count toward the resource limits. Mississippi is a non-expansion state, which makes the coverage gap real for people under 65 — but these Medicare programs are separate from that and are not affected by it.

If you are already in the Qualified Medicare Beneficiary program, providers are prohibited by federal law from billing you for Medicare deductibles, coinsurance or copayments. It is one of the most frequently violated rules in the system. Keep the letter confirming your status and produce it when a bill arrives.

Medicare plans Jackson offers change across three counties

Plans are approved county by county, and the Jackson area spans Hinds, Madison and Rankin. Those three counties have chosen very differently, which means a plan a friend recommends may not be available at your address at all.

CountyMedicare beneficiariesIn a private planDual eligible
Hinds45,67354.6%27.7%
Rankin31,07135.1%14.3%
Madison23,18033.1%13.9%

That is a twenty-point spread in private-plan enrollment across a single metropolitan area, and a doubling of the dual eligible rate. Mississippi as a whole runs at 45.3 percent and the national figure is 51.2 percent, so Hinds sits above both while Madison and Rankin sit well below.

Confirming your county is therefore the first practical step rather than a formality. It takes fifteen seconds and it decides what the rest of the conversation is about.

Mississippi gives no second chance on Medigap

Several states run a birthday or anniversary rule letting you change Medicare Supplement policies each year without health questions. Mississippi has neither.

What you get here is the federal minimum: one six-month open enrollment beginning when you are both 65 and enrolled in Part B, during which no insurer may refuse you or charge more for your health, plus a short list of guaranteed-issue situations. After that an application is medically underwritten and can be declined.

Two federal trial rights are the exception. If you joined a Medicare Advantage plan when you first became eligible at 65, or dropped a supplement to try Advantage for the first time, you may return without health questions provided you act within twelve months and apply no more than 63 days after the Advantage coverage ends. Each is available once in a lifetime.

In a state with no annual reopening, that first decision carries more weight than it does in Nevada or Illinois, and it is worth taking time over rather than making at a kitchen table under pressure.

How we compare Medicare plans Jackson residents can join

We are an independent agency working by phone and screen share, and we do not claim a Jackson storefront. What is local is the Mississippi license, the county-level plan data for Hinds, Madison and Rankin, and the network checking against your own physicians.

Given how many Hinds County beneficiaries are dual eligible, the first question we ask is usually about income and assets rather than about plans. If you qualify for a Medicare Savings Program or Extra Help, that is worth more than any difference between the Medicare plans Jackson carriers file, and it changes which plans are even sensible to consider.

Then the usual three: your county, your prescriptions with doses, and the doctors and hospitals you intend to keep.

What comparing Medicare plans Jackson offers costs you

Nothing. We are paid by the insurance company only if you enroll, at rates Medicare itself caps so the payment does not vary between plans in a way that would steer the recommendation. You can ask what we are paid on anything we show you.

Mississippi SHIP offers free counseling with nothing to sell on 844-822-4622, the Mississippi Insurance Department takes complaints about any agent including us on 800-562-2957, and Medicare answers on 1-800-MEDICARE. We would rather you reviewed the Medicare plans Jackson offers with one of them than with nobody at all.

One practical note on timing. Plan details for the coming year are published on October 1 and the Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 to December 7. The first fortnight of October is the best time to review the Medicare plans Jackson carriers file: the data is complete, early corrections have landed, and nobody is competing for an appointment yet.
