Medicare plans Southaven residents can enroll in for 2026 fall into three groups: Original Medicare paired with a Medigap policy, Medicare Advantage, and standalone Part D prescription drug coverage. Which of the Medicare plans Southaven carriers offer are open to you depends on the county of your permanent address, not the city name on your post.
Medicare plans Southaven residents can compare
Southaven is part of the Memphis metro, and many residents receive care in Tennessee. That state line is the single most important detail when comparing Medicare plans here.
You can meet by phone or online screen sharing rather than traveling anywhere. Call (877) 808-2900 to talk through your options with a licensed agent.
DeSoto County decides what you can enroll in
Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are approved county by county, not statewide. Southaven sits in DeSoto County, and your permanent address is what determines the plans you are eligible to join. DeSoto County sits in the Memphis metropolitan area, and its plan menu often looks different from the rest of Mississippi.
Check your doctors and hospitals first
Care around Southaven is concentrated in a small number of systems, including Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto and Memphis-area hospitals across the state line. Participation changes from year to year and can differ between two plans from the same insurer, so confirm your own doctors and preferred hospital directly with the plan and with the provider office before you enroll.
Crossing the state line for care
A Medicare Advantage plan is approved for Mississippi counties, but many Southaven residents see doctors in Tennessee. Some plans include Memphis-area providers in network and some do not. Check this explicitly before enrolling, because it is the most common and most expensive surprise in DeSoto County.
What to have ready
- Your Medicare number and your Part A and Part B start dates.
- Your permanent Southaven ZIP code.
- Every doctor and specialist you want to keep.
- Every prescription, with exact dosage and frequency.
- Any Medicaid, Extra Help, VA or employer coverage you already have.
Enrollment periods that apply
Most people can change plans during the Annual Enrollment Period each autumn, effective January 1. If you are already in a Medicare Advantage plan, a further window early in the year lets you switch once or return to Original Medicare. Special Enrollment Periods may apply if you move, lose other coverage, or gain or lose Medicaid. Moving into or out of Southaven is itself a qualifying event worth asking about.
Look past the premium when comparing Medicare plans Southaven offers

A zero-dollar premium does not mean zero cost. Compare the annual out-of-pocket maximum, specialist and hospital copays, and how each of your prescriptions is tiered on that plan's formulary. For most people it is the drug tiers and the out-of-pocket ceiling, not the premium, that decide what a plan really costs over a year.

The four parts behind the Medicare plans Southaven offers

Every plan you will be shown is built from the same four federal building blocks. Knowing which is which makes the rest of the comparison much easier.
Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing care, hospice and some home health. Most people pay no premium for it, because they or a spouse paid Medicare taxes for at least 40 quarters.
Part B covers outpatient care, doctor visits, lab work and preventive services. It carries a monthly premium and a late-enrollment penalty that lasts for life, so the timing of your enrollment matters more than most people expect.
Part C is Medicare Advantage. A private carrier takes over your Part A and Part B benefits and usually adds drug coverage plus extras such as dental, vision and hearing. Most of the Medicare plans Southaven residents actually enroll in are Part C plans, because the local market is competitive.
Part D is prescription drug coverage, sold either as a standalone policy alongside Original Medicare or bundled inside an Advantage plan.
The alternative route is Original Medicare paired with a Medicare Supplement, or Medigap, policy. That costs more each month, has no network at all, and leaves you very little to pay when you actually use care.
Mississippi has no Medigap birthday rule

This is the single most important piece of timing information for anyone in Mississippi weighing Original Medicare against Medicare Advantage, and it is the one most often left out.
Several states give Medicare Supplement policyholders an annual window to switch policies without answering health questions. Mississippi is not one of them.
Your one unconditional opportunity to buy a Medigap policy is the six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period that begins the month you turn 65 and are enrolled in Part B. During those six months a carrier must sell you any policy it offers at its standard rate, whatever your health history.
After that window closes, and outside a guaranteed-issue right, a Mississippi carrier may underwrite you: ask health questions, charge more, or decline you altogether.
That asymmetry is worth understanding before you choose. You can leave a Medicare Advantage plan for Original Medicare during the annual window, but nothing obliges a Medigap carrier to accept you when you apply.
Free, unbiased counseling is available from the Mississippi Division of Aging and Adult Services on (601) 359-4956 or (888) 240-7539, and the Mississippi Insurance Department publishes Medigap rate comparisons and takes complaints on (800) 562-2957.
What prescription coverage costs in 2026
Drug coverage is where choices among the Medicare plans Southaven offers most often go wrong. No plan is good or bad for drugs in general — it is good or bad for your particular list.
The 2026 rules help everyone. No Part D plan may charge a deductible above $615, and once you have spent $2,100 out of pocket on covered drugs your cost for the rest of the calendar year drops to zero. The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan lets you spread that amount across monthly installments rather than facing a large bill in January.
What still varies is the formulary. Check three things for every medication you take: whether the drug is covered at all, which tier it sits on, and whether the plan demands step therapy or prior authorization before it will pay.
If your income is limited, Extra Help through Social Security can cut premiums and copays substantially. A great many people who qualify never apply, and checking costs nothing.
How we narrow the Medicare plans Southaven offers
A licensed agent’s job is to make the list shorter, not longer. Three questions do most of the work.
Your doctors. We check every physician you want to keep against each plan’s directory, and confirm the medical group as well as the individual name. This alone eliminates most of the Medicare plans Southaven carriers sell.
Your prescriptions. Two plans with an identical premium can differ by thousands of dollars a year once your real drug list is priced against each formulary.
How you prefer to pay. Medicare Advantage keeps the monthly cost low and charges you as you use care. Medigap reverses that. Neither is better in the abstract; it depends on your budget and your tolerance for an unexpected bill.
Commissions are set by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and are identical across carriers for the same product line, so an independent broker comparing the Medicare plans Southaven carriers file has no financial reason to steer you toward any one of them. Our help costs you nothing.
Medicare plans Southaven offers sit in a low-penetration county
Southaven is the largest city in DeSoto County, and the county’s enrollment pattern is unusual enough to change how you should approach the comparison.
CMS enrollment data for May 2026 puts DeSoto County at 33,122 Medicare beneficiaries, with 20,414 in Original Medicare and 12,708 in a Medicare Advantage or other private plan. That is a private-plan share of about 38.4 percent.
Mississippi as a whole runs at 45.3 percent. The national figure is 51.2 percent. So DeSoto sits nearly seven points below its own state and almost thirteen below the country — a market where three beneficiaries in five keep Original Medicare.
The practical consequence is that Medicare Supplement coverage here is the majority route rather than the expensive exception. If you assumed a supplement was out of reach without pricing one, you are guessing in a market that may not support the guess, and rate history matters more than the first quote.
It also means the Advantage plans competing here are chasing a smaller pool, which can produce better benefit packages than the enrollment share suggests — alongside more year-to-year change, because plans in thinner markets adjust more often.
Assistance programs, and the 2026 limits
About 4,104 DeSoto beneficiaries — roughly 12.4 percent — are dual eligible. If your income is anywhere near the limits, the Medicare Savings Programs pay the Part B premium and, at the top level, deductibles and coinsurance too: about $1,350 a month for one person and $1,824 for a couple in 2026, with countable resources up to $9,950 and $14,910.
Extra Help reduces prescription costs, with 2026 income limits near $23,940 and $32,460. Your home, your car and certain burial funds generally do not count toward the resource limits.
Care crosses the state line even though Medicare plans Southaven sells do not
Southaven sits directly below the Tennessee border, and many residents use Memphis-area hospitals and specialists alongside DeSoto County facilities.
Your plan is set by your permanent Mississippi address, because Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are approved county by county. Your care is not restricted that way — but how it is paid for depends entirely on which route you took.
Under Original Medicare the state line does not matter: any provider who accepts Medicare will treat you, in either state, with no network to check. Under a Medicare Advantage HMO built around a Mississippi network, a Memphis specialist may be out of network or not covered at all outside an emergency. A PPO typically covers out-of-network care at a higher cost share.
If you use providers in both states, that distinction is the whole comparison, and it is the single most common thing we find people have not checked before enrolling.
Checking Medicare plans Southaven carriers file properly
Name every doctor you intend to keep on both sides of the line and have each one checked against the plan’s current directory. Not the hospital name alone — a carrier can contract differently with a hospital, its employed physicians, independent specialists practising there, and its outpatient locations.
Provider contracts are also renegotiated annually, so a specialist in network this year may not be next. That change appears in the Annual Notice of Change each autumn, which is the most useful and least read piece of post you receive.
Mississippi gives no annual second chance on Medigap
Several states run a birthday or anniversary rule letting you change Medicare Supplement policies each year without health questions. Mississippi has neither, and Tennessee’s rules do not help you because your policy follows your Mississippi address.
What you get is the federal minimum: one six-month open enrollment beginning when you are both 65 and enrolled in Part B, plus a short list of guaranteed-issue situations. After that an application is medically underwritten and can be declined.
Two one-time federal trial rights are the exception. If you joined a Medicare Advantage plan when first eligible at 65, or dropped a supplement to try Advantage for the first time, you may return without health questions provided you act within twelve months and apply no more than 63 days after that coverage ends.
In a county where the supplement route is this popular, and where cross-border care is common, that first decision carries more weight than it would elsewhere.
How we compare the Medicare plans Southaven residents can actually join
We work by phone and screen share rather than from a Southaven office, and we say so rather than imply a storefront. What is local is the Mississippi license, the DeSoto County data behind the Medicare plans Southaven carriers file, and checking Tennessee providers against Mississippi-filed plans.
What comparing Medicare plans Southaven offers costs you
Nothing. We are paid by the insurer only if you enroll, at rates Medicare caps. Mississippi SHIP gives free counseling with nothing to sell on 844-822-4622, and the Mississippi Insurance Department takes complaints about any agent, including us, on 800-562-2957.
When to review the Medicare plans Southaven carriers file
Plan details are published on October 1 and Annual Enrollment runs October 15 to December 7. Early October is the best time, before appointments get scarce.
For a border household there is one extra reason to review every year. Provider contracts are renegotiated annually, and a Memphis specialist in network this year may not be next. Moving across the state line is itself a qualifying event that opens a Special Enrollment Period.
One last point specific to Southaven. Because so many households here use providers on both sides of the border, the single most valuable thing you can bring to a conversation about the Medicare plans Southaven offers is a complete list of your doctors, including the Tennessee ones. That list decides more than any premium comparison will.
